Significance of Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is a significant day for Christians as it marks the resurrection or rebirth of Lord Jesus. Read on to know more about the significance of Easter Sunday.

Easter is the oldest and one of the most important Christian festivals. It is the celebration ofresurrection Jesus Christ. The dawn of Easter Sunday which brings in a message of new life is a high point of the Christian year.

The Easter Story

Easter is the story of Jesus Christ’s last days in Jerusalem prior to his death. This story includes the Last supper leading to the Eucharist also known as the Maundy Thursday, the day on which Jesus was crucified commonly referred to as Good Friday and the Easter Sunday which is the day on which Jesus is believed to have come back to life.

The Easter story is not a happy one because it is centered around the death of Jesus Christ. However, the story does have a happy ending because it is believed that Jesus came back to life and visited his friends and followers once more. Legend has it that he never died- He simply went back up to Heaven to be with God, his father.

When is Easter?

Easter normally falls in the month of April. It can fall as early as March 22 or as late as April 25. This year Easter Sunday will be celebrated on Sunday 8 April 2012.

What is the Significance of Easter Eggs?

The custom of giving eggs at Easter is to celebrate new life. Eggs are considered to be symbols of new life and immortality. Eggs have come to represent the Lord's resurrection. It is believed that just as Jesus Christ broke out of the tomb on Easter morning, the egg yolk breaks out of its shell when cracked. Decorating the Easter egg is part of the folk traditions of many cultures, although it does not hold any specific religious significance.

Fun with Easter Eggs

Here are some fun ways to celebrate Easter Sunday with Easter Eggs

a) Community Egg Hunt -

Many families and several churches organise this event. This is a fun activity in which adults and children can both participate. Gifts can be distributed in the forms of candies, chocolates, egg replica to those who can hunt for eggs and became successful in finding them. This is a fun filled activity which can be easily organised with a little bit of planning.

b) Making Easter Bunny Ears -

Kids love this fun activity. Kids enjoy wearing their own creations. To make bunny ears you will require colorful cardboards, thick paper and glue. You must draw or trace and cut out the bunny ears in the white cardboard.

Next you must cut a pair of smaller ears using the pink or blue paper and glue the colored ears onto the white ears so the pink or blue resembles the inside of the bunny's ears. To fit the ear around a child’s head cut around 7 cm of white cardboard to make a band of appropriate size. Staple it in place and attach the bunny ears to the band.

c) Easter Cards -

This is another Easter family activity which kids particularly enjoy. These cards can be sent to distant friends and relatives. For preparing the cards you will need colorful cardboards which can be easily purchased from any local stationery shop. You must cut the cardboard into 2 times the size of normal post card.

Next cut out or make various shapes like those of eggs, animals or any such thing in cardboard, paper, or even pieces of fabric. To make children enjoy Easter and understand its relevance it is important o get the kids involved in card making process by giving them child-friendly scissors to do the cutting of cards.
