Inculcating Good Behaviour with 'I Caught You Being Good Jar'

Inculcating Good Behaviour with 'I Caught You Being Good Jar'

‘I Caught You Being Good Jar’ is one of the positive techniques to discipline kids and inculcate good behaviour in them. Let us take a look at how this method works.

Positive reinforcement is often cited to be the best method for discipline and integrating good behaviour in kids. The best and the most efficient ways of inculcating good behaviour is to present a genuine smile, a warm compliment, praise, treats and other pleasant feedback to the child. It is human psychology to work harder when appreciated and acknowledged and the “I caught you being Good Jar” manages to do just that.

What Is the “I Caught You Being Good Jar”

I caught you being good jar worked as a method of positive reinforcement and has been shared by many psychiatrists and child behaviour experts. The jar is actually a clear plastic or glass container with a completely removable lid or a flip lid. There should be a sticker posted on the Jar with the words “I Caught you Being Good” clearly stencilled on it or written with coloured attractive print. The point is to highlight the concept of “caught you being good”.
You can make a similar jar by using old plastic popcorn, candy or biscuit jars. Write out the line along with any special message on paper and stick it to the jar with glue. Try decorating the jar with ribbons and coloured cotton balls to make it look good.

How to Use the Jar

The Jar is to be used for rewarding positive behaviour in kids and encouraging the reoccurrence of such behaviour. You have to be very clear about exactly what behaviour is being rewarded before giving out the reward. For example if you see your elder kid voluntarily offering to take care of your younger one, write a message like “ Tina I caught you being good when you fed your little sister and put her to sleep and so I am going to put in a candy bar for you inside the jar”. Your kid can then go read the message and pick out his or her treat from the jar.

When to Use the Jar

Child psychiatrists and school education researchers have collaborated to find out that the system of using “I caught you doing Good Jar” works best when the kid is being very naughty or is going through a particularly mischievous phase. In schools these jars are used mostly before and after lunch hours (naughtiest times of the day). The idea is to encourage children who are not inclined towards good behaviour at the moment to show some signs of it.

Advantages of Using the Jar

The “I caught you being Good Jar” encourages good behaviour in children without using any form of negative punitive methods. There is no need for the parent to use harsh disciplinary methods which can later traumatize the kid. The bond between parents and kids is strengthened as children naturally love appreciation and encouragement. A positive learning environment can be successfully created with the use of this jar. Usually the demonstration of positive behaviour rises as and when the child recognises that the parent appreciates his or her good efforts.

Precautions While Using the Jar

The “I caught you being Good Jar” is a model of positive reinforcement and care should be taken to not let it develop into a form of bribery. Parents should only reward good behaviour when required and daily activities which are performed by kids should only be acknowledged. For example doing homework is a daily activity while helping with the dishes is a reward worthy activity. Also it is important to not let kids get the idea that any completed task deserves a reward otherwise they will start demanding treats for each activity.
The “I caught you Being Good Jar” concept does work quite well if you apply it intelligently and creatively.

How does ‘I Caught You Being Good Jar’ method works for disciplining kids? What are the advantages of ‘I Caught You Being Good Jar ‘method? What are the disadvantages of ‘I Caught You Being Good Jar’ method? Discuss here.

If parents follow such ways, kids are encouraged to follow discipline and good behaviour.
