How to Deal with Stubborn and Rebellious Children

How to Deal with Stubborn and Rebellious Children

Parents should deal with stubborn and rebellious children tactfully. Here are some tips for dealing with stubborn and rebellious children.

Sid is only 8 years old but is very stubborn. If he is not willing to do a particular task his parents find it hard to persuade him to do the same. Sid’s parents are planning to take their son for a counselling session.
Stubborn and rebellious nature in children is not only restricted to the teenagers only but it is quite common in the toddlers and pre-teens as well. Parenting is a tough job especially when parents have to deal with stubborn and rebellious kids. Parents need to have special skills to handle such children as special care has to be taken so that children do not feel down.

Notions of Parents about Stubbornness

Most of the parents have the notion that stubbornness is an abnormality in behaviour but it is actually not that for all. Children behave in stubborn manner because of learning mistake. When children show their rebellious and stubborn attitude, parents find it difficult to deal with the situation and most of them are at loss. But as every problem has a solution, parents can also follow certain strategies to manage the stubborn nature of their children.
If parents fail to identify this stubborn attribute of their children in time and are not prepared to nurture the emotions of their children properly, stubbornness can become a trait of these children and will lead them into difficult situations at various phases of life.

Stubbornness is Not Always Negative

Parents must not always keep a negative point of view towards stubbornness of their children. A child shows stubborn nature to depict his or her thoughts to the parents or whoever is around. Showing stubbornness gives a feeling of satisfaction to the child as he or she feels that the current situation is under his or her control. This ultimately boosts up the self-esteem of the child. When such situations arise, parents must try to calm the child by making him or her understand the right things calmly.
Parents must first try to find out the probable cause that could have triggered the stubborn attitude in the child. The children may be reacting to certain situation out of fear or they are doing it just to be identified as rebellions.

Parents Must Avoid Arguing

While dealing with a stubborn child, parents must have to take the situation to such a stage where child feels that he or she has won. At no point of time parents could forcefully rectify their stubborn child. Children are also stressed and undergo lots of tensions. Some of these stresses can be visible and reasons are known to the parents but many of these are unknown to the parents. So, the first thing a parent must do while dealing with a rebellious child is to keep cool.
Parents have to observe the situation carefully and they have to identify the factor(s) that is making their children behave in stubborn manner. When parents start arguing with the child or scold the child in front of others, it actually makes the child feel down and unwanted. Parents can change the topic and distract the child towards some other topic and avoid making the situation more stressful. Parents must give patient hearing to what the child is saying and talk less. Communication more with the child will definitely improve the situation.

Parents are the Role Models

If children get to see their parents arguing on every single issue and the atmosphere at home is not at all peaceful, parents cannot really blame their children being rebellious and stubborn. Children always have a role model who inspires them through the hard times. If parents can become the role model for their children then children are bound to become well-mannered and well-behaved.
Parents must also listen to the likings and disliking of their children so that they feel valued and respected. Understanding the kids is important for the parents and it is the only way to treat their stubborn child affectionately.
